Description:

A Federal Walnut Work Table, late 18th/early 19th c., lower Mississippi River Valley, having a two board top, thumb molded skirt with drawer on cabriole legs, tulip poplar secondary wood, height 28 1/2 in., width 33 in., depth 25 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: The two board top, drawer of small proportions, and understated cabriole legs of this table are similar to several tables from the Lower Mississippi River Valley, including: a cherry and cypress table descended in the family of an Alexandria Louisiana plantation owner and in the collection of Mary Raymond of New Orleans; a walnut table in the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Jack Holden, Maison Chenal, Jarreau, Louisiana; and a walnut table from the collection of Dr. George Crozat at Houmas House, Burnside, Louisiana, sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 612 on May 17, 2003 The restrained classicism of this table indicates its maker may have been working from Biedermeier traditions rather than Louis XV forms. The incised beading on the skirt of this table is lso known from other Lower Mississippi River Valley sources, such as a late 18th c. Louisiana cypress table from Acadiana sold as lot 418 by Neal Auction Company on December 3, 2005 Gracious thanks to Jack Holden, Francis J. Puig, Douglas Solliday, and James D. Didier for their expert consideration of this table. Reference: Poesch, Early Furniture of Louisiana, p. 30, pl. 15; Puig.
