A Fine American Renaissance Carved and Burled Walnut Armchair, late 19th c., attributed to Gustave Herter, New York, scrolled stiles with bosses, upholstered back and seat, padded arms with lion's head terminals, cabochon and leaf-carved supports with volute terminals, outswept paw feet, casters.

  • Notes: Note: The scrolled back, padded arms, and well-carved monopodia supports on this chair are similar to those on a rosewood armchair made c. 1860 by Gustave Herter for the Ruggles Morse residence in Portland, Maine. The distinctive double-lobed paw feet on this chair are also related to those on a walnut exhibition stand made 1858-1864 and branded G. Herter, now in the Detroit Institute of Arts (acc. 1989.4) Reference: Howe, Frelinghuysen, Voorsanger. Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age. pp. 127 & 132 fig. 1 & 3.
