Lot 42
Description:
An American Classical Mahogany Serving Table, early 19th c., attributed to the workshop of Duncan Phyfe, New York, swivel top with deep drop-leaf, molded skirt, tapered columnar supports, tapered trestle legs, disc feet, conforming stretcher, height 29 1/4 in., open length 54 1/2 in., width 46 in.
- Notes: Note: The use of finely figured veneers and columnar supports with a sophisticated conforming medial stretcher on this table can also be seen on a games table attributed to Phyfe illustrated in Feld. Of the Newest Fashion, Masterpieces of American Decorative Arts p. 24, fig. 15A-B. The distinctive, spreading pilaster-form moldings atop the trestle base, seen here, recall those on a console table labeled by Phyfe and descended in the family of his daughter Eliza. Reference: Mc Clelland. Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency. p. 128, pl. 111-112.
