Description:

A Fine American Renaissance Carved Rosewood Sofa, c. 1860, attributed to Alexander Roux, New York, the stepped beribboned rail with a heraldic crest, floral festoons, padded arms with hound's head terminals, floral and beribboned seat rail, quatrefoil blocks, carved and fluted trumpet legs, casters, retains original surface, height 49 1/2 in., width 71 1/2 in., depth 27 in.

  • Notes: Note: The proportions, design of the back, arm supports and seat rail on this sofa are directly related to those on a sofa bearing the stenciled label of Alexander Roux illustrated in Dubrow. Styles of American Furniture. p. 37. Most notably, the dog head arm ends on this sofa are similar in form and execution to the dog figures that are the supports for a c. 1855 walnut sideboard by Alexander Roux at the Brooklyn Museum (acc. 1995.15)
