Lot 158
Description:
A Fine American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Étagère, mid-19th c., attributed to John and Joseph W. Meeks, New York, floral carved strapwork crest, segmented arched mirror back flanked by six shelves on turned supports, serpentine top with reticulated apron, cabriole legs, scroll feet, height 104 in., width 69 in., depth 24 1/4 in.
- Notes: Note: The secondary crests and the legs with pierced construction and two-rose carved knees on this étagère are identical to those on an étagère attributed to Meeks, illustrated in Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th c. 1840-1880, p. 144. The central apron crest also recalls forms known in many laminated seat furnishings from the Meeks firm, including those in the "Stanton Hall", "Henry Ford", and "Hawkins" patterns. (Ibid, 82-83.) The carved legs on this étagère are also identical to those on a rosewood étagère by a New York maker at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute. (D'Ambrosio. Masterpieces of the Munson Williams Proctor Institute. pp. 80-81, fig 25.)
