A Fine Antique American Sterling Silver Water Pitcher, Gale & Willis, NY, act. 1859-1862, ret. Hayden & Whilden, Charleston, c. 1855-1863, engraved "Bedon", pear-shaped with lobed neck, elaborate shell lip, naturalistic handle with applied lotus leaves and birds on textured ground, height 10 1/2 in., weight 30.70 troy ozs.

  • Notes: Note: The Bedon family¹s history in Charleston goes back to the mid 17th century. In 1677 George Bedon received a land grant on the Ashley River where he built Pierpont Plantation. The plantation house was burned by Union soldiers not long after this pitcher was made. Bedon¹s Alley in Charleston is named for the family.
