Description:
A Good French Bronze of "The North Wind Boreas with the Nymph Orithyia", 19th c., variegated patina with some rubbed areas, height 40 in., width 19 in., depth 17 in.
- Notes: Note: Another of the sculptures ordered by Colbert for the Park of Versailles, this group, "Boreas and Orithyia", was intended to be allegorical of Air. The original marble was carved in 1684-87 by Gaspard Marsy (1624-1681) and Anselme Flaman (1647-1717), and has now been transferred to the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris. It has been replicated in bronzes of approximately this same size, among many museum examples is a fine cast in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (1986.74.2).
