Description:

A Monumental American Rococo Carved Rosewood Library Table, mid-19th c., bears presentation plaque, "Presented to A. Sivori by J.H. Belter Co., Jan. 1861"; serpentine white marble top, shaped apron of laminated construction centered by rocaille cartouches, and pair of opposing drawers, the cabriole legs topped by four portrait busts of Romantic poets issuing from strapwork scrolls, a complex stretcher centered by a carved basket that is an embellishment, bud pendant, the acanthine feet ending in casters, height 30 in., width 60 in.

  • Notes: Note: Several construction elements found on this table are related to techniques seen in work by John Henry Belter. The skirt is constructed of thick horizontal laminated layers, seen on most tables by Belter with solid aprons lacking heavy reticulation. The drawer bottoms have been secured to the backs with small screws, a detail often seen on dressing bureaus bearing the Belter patent stamp. The rosewood drawers of this table also have a small removable peg in the side near the back to stop it when pulled to the apron. The portrait busts on this table are executed similarly to examples from Belter's oeuvre: they are carved with similar rounded physiognomy to the "Founding Fathers" busts on a sofa and an "Ancient Poets" parlor suite of four chairs and two méridienne, all attributed to Belter in the Manney Collection. The busts on the table seen here are varied, with a different personage in different dress on each of the four legs, just as the Manney Collection examples, and interestingly also seen in the variation of leg carving (dolphin, eagle, swine, bear) on the well-known "Rosalie" parlor table. Reference: A bureau with the Belter stamp and with drawer elements similar to that on this table was sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 100 on December 1, 2007. Bust carved furniture from Belter is illustrated in Schwartz, Stanek, True. John Henry Belter and the Rococo Revival, p. 48-49, figs. 13-16; p. 60, fig 34; p. 66, fig 41-42; p. 68, fig 47. Dubrow.
