Description:

A New Orleans Coin Silver Goblet, Küchler & Himmel for Hyde & Goodrich, c. 1852-1853, the bell-shaped bowl with beaded rim, chased acanthus leaves on punch ground, conforming stem, stepped foot with papyrus and leaf footrim, period script monogram "EHM" for Edward H. Miles (b. 1852), height 5 3/4 in., weight 5.30 troy ozs.

  • Notes: Note: The goblets offered as lots 300 - 302 commemorate the births of the three sons of General William R. and Frances Mayrant Miles of Mileston, Mississippi, and New Orleans. During the Civil War, Miles commanded a Confederate regiment known as "Miles' Louisiana Legion" which fought at the Battles of Plains Store and Port Hudson. The New York Times, May 28, 1869, published excerpts from a letter General Miles wrote in support of ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment: "We want a Government, a good Government, the best Government we can get. We want the repose, and security and confidence that a State Government alone can give. Cannot the entire population, then, both white and black, unite upon common ground, and bring about this desired result?"
