A Rare and Important Louis XVI Gold-Mounted Oblong Tortoiseshell Vanity Box, c. 1780-1785, the lid set with a large portrait miniatureof a gentlewoman by Antoine Vestier (1740-1824), length 6 in. E20000/30000 Note: Antoine Vestier was made a member of the French Academy in 1786, having gained a widespread reknown for his finely detailed portraits in watercolor and enamel. Three portrait miniaturesby Vestier are in the collection of the Musee' du Louvre, Paris. Provenance: Ex-collection of Edith Kingdon Gould. Mrs. Gould was a noted Gilded Age collector of portrait miniatures, gold-mounted boxes,fans and enamels. The American Art Association, Inc. auction cataloguefor Mrs. Gould's estate is included with this lot, which was offered in the January 1929 auction as lot #133. Edith Kingdon was an actress before marrying financier Jay Gould's brother George, to the scandalization of New York society. She is shown in the photograph ( above) wearing the infamous rope of pearls for which she paid $1.5 million.
