A Rare Miniature Gilt Bronze Sinumbra Lamp, c. 1840, by William Carleton, Boston, with cut and etched blown-glass shade, mounted on a marble base, overall height 18 in. Note: Although this reworked burner lacks its label, an identical 17 in. lamp (though of patinated bronze, instead of the burnished and polished gilding of this example) bears the burner label "Manufactured by W. Carleton / Boston": see G. T. Gowitt, 19th c. Elegant Lighting, Atglen, PA, 2002, p. 174.
