A Renaissance Revival Exuberantly Carved Brazilian Rosewood Parlor Suite, c. 1870-1875, possibly Herter Bros., New York, consisting of a sofa, generously proportioned armchair, and two large side chairs, the sofa with concave double back cresting in a swagged flaming urn flanked by floral cascades and volutes, the center panel with an owl perched among branches, stiles and moldings with meandering interlaced scrolls and rope carving, the terminals in the form of griffins with paired claw feet blocked at the base, sofa: height 44 in., width 66 in , depth 22 in., armchair: height 39 in., width 30 in., depth 22 in. E4000-6000 Note: A hall bench with griffin supports and bifurcated legs ending in paw feet very similar to those in lot 287 was installed in the entrance hall of the David Einstein house, 39, West 57th Street New York, c. 1883. A carved griffin stile, with a widened, almost bifurcated leg ending in a spreading foot, also similar to that of lot 287 is used on the ends of a console by Herter Brothers, New York.
