Description:

An Important American Rococo Carved Walnut Center Table, mid-19th c., attributed to Alexander Roux, New York, the turtle top with gadrooned molding over a naturalistically carved apron with scrolls, flora and a pair of opposed wolf masques, on cabriole legs with Minerva bust terms, joined by a scrolled X stretcher with fruit basket finial and scroll feet ending in casters, height 28 1/2 in., width 44 in., depth 35 in. E7000-10000 Provenance: This table was probably installed in the library of Jewett William Adams (1835-1920) when he became Governor of Nevada (1882-1886). Note: The finely rendered high relief carving and the use of animal motifs in lot 286 can be seen on other work by the Roux firm. Notably a console table conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (illus. Voorsanger, Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, p. 65, fig. 44) and a server in the Brooklyn Museum (illus. http://www brooklynmuseum.org/research/luce/) each feature distinctively carved hunt figures. A walnut server with carved figural elements of the same quality and manner as those in the table above was sold by James Julia on August 21, 2003 as lot 1252 for
