A Set of Six American Restauration Carved Mahogany Side Chairs, c. 1840-1850, attributed to Charles A. Baudouine (1808-1895), New York, the crest and splat composed of S scrolls joined at the center by a fan carving, serpentine seat and lotus carved cabriole legs with scrolled toes, upholstered in woven horsehair. E1200-2000 Note: Baudouine made a set of 42 closely related chairs for the White House during the Polk administration. Sixteen of those chairs remain in the collection of the White House and are pictured in Betty C. Monkman, White House Historical Association, p. 103. Baudoine is listed in the New York directory between 1828 and 1852 as working at 333 Broadway.
