A Sierra Leone Carved Stone Head, Mahen Yafe, supported by a thick, strong neck, the upturned life-sized head with domed, almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, full closed lips, C-shaped ears set with circular earrings, beneath an intricate notched coiffure with a domed projection, height 9 1/4 in., width 11 1/2 in., mounted to a hexagonal wood plinth, overall height 11 1/4 in.
PLEASE NOTE: Provenance: Acquired by William W. Hodges of Kokomo, IN, mid-1960s, while developing teacher training schools at the University of Njala, Sierra Leone. Note: Life size stone heads are called mahen yafe (spirits of the chief) by the Mende of Sierra Leone, where they are also associated with the Sapi aristocracy.
