Description:
A Steinway Ebonized Duo-Art Reproducing Grand Piano, c. 1928, Model AR, serial # 264395, with over seventy music rolls, height 40 in., length 6 ft. 11 1/2 in., width 5 ft., with matching bench and cushion.
- Provenance: Provenance : Descended in the family of Mr. Earl C. Sams, New Rochelle, NY. Sams was the first president of J.C. Penney and one of the first investors of Marriott Hotels. Note: The Aeolian Company of New York was formed in 1914 and almost immediately started installing their Duo-Art player mechanisms in Steinway pianos. Their unique method allowed the actual composers to play on a piano, and through electrical contacts, transmit to the paper punch machine making the master roll. After some careful editing the composer signed off on the "recording" and additional rolls were made. Most of the great composers of the 20s and 30s made rolls for the Aeolian Company.
