Description:

A Very Fine American Renaissance Ebonized, Inlaid and Gilt Incised Gueridon, c. 1870, attributed to Kimbell and Cabus, New York, the deeply molded top with a finely inlaid, tinted spray of spring flowers including lilies of the valley, boughs of apple blossoms, and honeysuckle vines above the shaped skirt, raised on a turned stem with swans, acorn drop, ending in splayed hairy paw feet, retains original surface, height 31 in., diameter 23 in. Note: The juxtaposition of the marquetry top with the hand carved, ebonized and incised-gilt elements on this example are indicative of the Kimbell and Cabus firm. The same contrast can be found on a Renaissance Revival cabinet in the Brooklyn Museum and also on a cabinet photographed in the Kimbell and Cabus design book conserved by Cooper Hewitt. These cabinets and other examples by the firm are illustrated in, David Hanks, Mary Jean Madigan, ed., 19th-Century Furniture, Innovation, Revival and Reform, p. 62.
