An Interesting American Carved Walnut Mechanical Library Chair, late 19th c., attributed to Theodore Hofstatter Jr., New York, having an adjustable back, padded arms terminating in lion's heads, beaded and molded seat rail, scrolled legs with paw feet, fitted with pull out foot rest and iron rachet bars, scrolled legs with paw feet, height 39 in., width 22 in., depth 23. Note: The carved stiles and iron armatures on this example are very similar to a chair by Theodore Hofstatter in the Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection at the High Museum of Art and illustrated in Donald Pierce, Art & Enterprise American Decorative Art 1825-1917 in the Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection, p. 174, pl. 88.
