Description:

American School, 19th c., "Sinking of the S.S. City of Houston, Oct. 23, 1878, and the rescue of those on board by the Margaret", watercolor, unsigned, with information on the shipwreck en verso, 22 in. x 28 in., in an ornate giltwood period frame.

  • Notes: Note: The night of October 22nd, 1878, the SS City of Houston encountered "The Gale of 1878," which was storm number nine of the 1878 hurricane season. After having passed over Cuba and around the Florida peninsula, the storm headed up the eastern coast before making landfall in North Carolina, where it met several unfortunate boats, including the Single Engine Steam Ship City of Houston, which was carrying passengers and freight from New York to Galveston. Fortunately, the passengers aboard the City of Houston were rescued by the passing steamer The Margaret as the ship went under; the sunken ship and its 19th century artifacts still exist off the coast of North Carolina today and are a popular site for visiting divers to explore.
