Description:

American School, late 19th c., "Two Figures on a Wide Beach", oil on canvas, unsigned, 12 in. x 33 in., in an elaborate period carved, gessoed, and giltwood frame.

  • Notes: Note: The unusual scope of this attractive picture seems to indicate an American artist. The very dramatic sky appears full of typically American atmospheric effects, with lowering, threatening clouds, and a shower of rain over the distant headland. The handling of the two figures, isolated on a very wide beach, appears characteristically American, as does the stylized form of the long wave. The palette may be darker than the typical 19th century artist's, but the sense of vastness and emptiness accords well with the sense of the sublime engendered by the new continent.
