An American Aesthetic Art Pottery Vase, c. 1880, attributed to Maria Longworth Nichols, probably Rookwood Pottery, Cincinnati, blue-gray with colored slip, decoration of Japanese landscapes with fishermen at a lake and egrets on a branch, signed on outer rim with Japanese characters in vertical sequence and initialed indistinctly, height 17 124in., width 8.5in. E4000-6000 Provenance: High Museum, Atlanta; Virginia Carroll Crawford Coll. Note: See Art & Enterprise, p. 232, pl. 121 for an extensive discussion of this vase. Maria Longworth Nichols founded the Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati in 1880.
