An American Carved Oak "House of Representatives" Armchair, mid-19th century., signed Bembe & Kimbel, 928 Broadway, New York, after the design of Thomas U. Walter, the crest carved with a Federal stars and stripes shield over pendant chain stiles, bowed seat with turned lotus and star-carved legs ending in notched toes, height 39 in. E10000-15000 Note: The designer of this chair, Thomas Ustich Walter ( 1804-1887), architect of the U.S. Capitol, was also responsible for the majority of the redesigned House of Representative building. The chairs were in use from 1857 to 1873 when remodeling resulted in the sale of the Walters furnishings. Other chairs from this group have been sold in these rooms as lot 496 on October 4, 2003 and lot 553 on February 18, 2005 Reference: High Museum of Art, Art and Enterprise, pp. 366-367.
