Description:
An American Classical Carved Mahogany Mixing Cabinet, early 19th c., Baltimore or Philadelphia, the original white marble top above a paneled frieze, outset scrolled brackets, flame veneered paneled door, plinth base with scrolled sides, disc feet, top bearing old ink inscription "Annapolis..", height 40 1/2 in., width 37 in., depth 19 in.
- Literature: Reference: A similar pedestal cabinet from the Lee Anderson collection is illustrated in Robert Smith, "The Furniture of Anthony Quervelle, Part IV, Some Case Pieces", The Magazine Antiques, page 189, pl. 11. For a sideboard design using "Egyptian" panels, see Ackerman's Regency and Interiors reprinted by Agius (1984) p. 142, pl. 197.
- Notes: Note: The rare and distinctive form of this mixing cabinet was used by a number of noted Philadelphia and Baltimore cabinetmakers, including Anthony Quervelle. The use of the trapezoidal "Egyptian" form panel on the case of this cabinet shows the influence of designs by English Regency designers. A cabinet attributed to Anthony Quervelle, also using an "Egyptian" trapezoidal panel as seen here, was sold in these rooms as lot 49, December 1, 2007, for $8,225.
