Lot 572
An American Classical Carved Mahogany Secretary Bookcase, c. 1830-50, Baltimore, the canted cornice over a pair of glazed doors with anthemion mullions, the fold out desk top with drawers above and below, the two lower paneled cabinet doors flanked by composite columns above a stepped plinth and turned feet, height 93.33in., width 40.5in., depth 25.25in. Note: The overall form and distinctive carved anthemion decoration of the glazed upper section in this example bespeak design favored by Baltimore cabinetmakers during the Classical period. Reference: A Baltimore secretary with similarly carved anthemion and waterleaf-form mullions can be found in Weidman and Goldborough, Classical Maryland, Baltimore, 1993, p. 136. A secretary signed by Baltimore maker Anthony Jenkins was offered as lot 395 on December 6, 2003.
