An American Late Classical Mahogany Accordion-Action Extension Dining Table, c. 1835, Boston, bearing paper label "Briggs' Extension Dining Table Patented Sept. 1819, Manufactured and Warranted by C.C. & J. Briggs 507 Washington Street, Boston", demilune ends with molded skirt opening to take four original leaves, the "accordion" extenders with cable reel mechanism, baluster center support flanked by four lotus carved scroll legs, brass casters, height 30 in., length with leaves 92 1/2 in., diameter 44 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: Cornelius Briggs is first listed as a cabinetmaker in Boston in 1817 An innovative design of leaf extensions related to those used here was patented in England by the prestigious Gillows firm of Lancaster and London in 1800 The convenient aspects of the technique were likely to be appealing to the newly wealthy industrial families of New England and were finely executed by American furniture makers.
