An American Neo-Grec Ebonized and Gilt-Incised Side Chair, late 19th c., branded "Hunzinger, NY" "pat March 30, 1869", turned and blocked crest with curved ends connected to diagonal stiles and legs, oval padded back, round seat connected by upright spindles and cross stretchers, later ebonization, height 33 in.
- Notes: Note: On March 30, 1869 George Hunzinger received a patent for the design of this chair, which uses a pair of continuous diagonal stiles from the crestrail to the front feet intended to enhance structural strength. Noting the American habit of tipping a chair on its back legs when seated in it, Hunzinger observed his chair, "...is braced to the side of the seat, and the front legs are similarly sustained, so that one part aids in sustaining the other..." A side chair marked "Pat. App for" by Hunzinger, nearly identical to this lot, is part of the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
