- Notes: Note: The distinctive carved faces on the terms of this cabinet are identical to those on a sphinx figural card stand attributed to Allen and Brother in the collection of Ian Berke. The elaborate juxtaposition of gilt and ebonization and well carved figural decoration on this cabinet is indicative of other works attributed to Allen and Brother, including a center table from the Judith Hollander collection and seat furniture in the Berke collection. The finely cast pa el of the central door of this cabinet is very similar to examples from Emile Guillemin (France, 1841-1907). A panel by Guillemin similar to that on this lot was used on the door of a parlor cabinet by Charles Guillemin Diehl in the Musee d'Orsay. William Allen Sr., a purveyor of exotic woods and furniture was succeeded by his sons, William Jr. and Joseph in the Allen workshop at 137 Walnut Street in Philadelphia in 1847 By 1869 Joseph partnered with another Allen brother, James, and Allen and Brother had solidified a reputation for fine goods and custom cabinet work. James Allen closed the firm in 1902 Reference: Talbot. "Allen and Brother, Philadelphia Furniture Makers," Magazine Antiques, (May, 1996) pp. 716, pl. I, pp. 720-722, pl.
