Description:

An American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Méridienne, c. 1850-60, attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, in the pattern referred to as "Rosali$E", floral and grape carved crest, molded arm support and floral carved seat rail, cabriole legs, casters, height 39 in., width 38 in., depth 20 in. Note : Though made in New York City, high style Rococo Revival furniture such as the méridienne seen here had particular historic appeal to plantation owners in the Deep South. Rococo style simultaneously evoked 18th-century estate living and robust 19th-century innovation that appealed to the agrarian society. This lot appears identical to a pair of méridiennes attributed to Belter illustrated in Dubrow. American Furniture of the 19th c., 1840-1880, p. 114."
