An Important American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Center Table, c. 1850, attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, the serpentine white marble top above a conforming pierced skirt with grapevine carving, each side centered by a Renaissance portrait bust; fruit carved cabriole legs connected by C scroll stretchers, centered by a floral and fruit urn, casters, height 28 in., width 40 in., depth 29 in. Note : The portrait busts on this table are executed similarly to examples from John Henry Belter's oeuvre: the rounded physiognomy relates to the ""Founding Fathers"" busts on a sofa and an ""Ancient Poets"" parlor suite, attributed to Belter in the Manney Collection; Romantic poets on the legs of a library table offered by Neal Auction Company as lot 811 September 13, 2009; and Classical poets on a table sold by Christie's as lot 129, October 3, 2007 This table is nearly identical to a table with the portrait busts sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 838 on December 3, 2005, realizing $67 500 Reference: Important ""Bust Carved"" furniture from Belter is illustrated in Schwartz, Stanek, True.
