Lot 389
Description:
An American Rococo Carved Rosewood Center Table, mid-19th c., attributed to Alexander Roux, New York, serpentine rosewood top with gadrooned edge, skirt carved with cabochon cartouches and fitted with drawers; C scroll legs and stretchers, melon urn and pendant, height 28 in., width 48 3/8 in., depth 35 in.
- Notes: Note: A number of carved details on this table are similar to those on many documented pieces by Alexander Roux: the gadrooned top is similar to that on a walnut center table attributed to Roux from the library of Nevada Governor Jewett William Adams, sold in these rooms as lot 286 on February 3, 2007; the deeply carved shell cartouche on the apron is similar to that on a rosewood dresser bearing Roux's stenciled label sold as lot 538 on October 4, 1989; the "C" scroll cabriole legs with tight scroll terminals are similar to those on the Gov. Adams table mentioned above, and a rosewood library table attributed to Roux and illustrated in Dubrow. American Furniture of the 19th c., 1840-1880 p. 134. The opposing "C" scroll cabriole legs on this table are also similar to those on two important rosewood etageres by Roux, one at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 1971.219.220) and the other with the High Museum, Atlanta (acc. 1981.1000.66).
