An American Rococo Laminated Rosewood Sofa, mid-19th c., attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, the back and arms surrounded with scrolling grapevines, fruit clusters and leaves crested by baskets of flowers, conforming serpentine seat rail and foliate carved cabriole legs, height 42 in., length 67 in., depth 23in E8000-12000 Note: The grapevine carving featured in the reticulated back on this example can be seen in other known examples attributed to the Belter firm: a bergere from the Manney collection illustrated in Schwartz, Stanek and True, The Furniture of John Henry Belter and the Rococo Revival p 45, pl 9 has a nearly identical treatment of the back frame.
