An Egyptian Revival Carved Rosewood Armchair, late 19th c., attributed to Herter Bros., New York, the rectangular back with scrolled stiles, padded arms fronted by Pharaoh terms with hoof feet ending in casters, height 38 in., width 28.5in., depth 27 in. E3000- 5000 Note: The execution of the terms and hoof feet used on this chair are similar to those used on two known Herter tables, both made for the Ruggles Sylvester Morse residence in Portland, Maine and now conserved by the Victoria Society of Maine. The execution of the scroll back of this chair also resembles those on a Herter sofa and armchair in the Morse residence. Though a Maine native, Morse grew his fortune as an hotelier in New Orleans in the 1840's and 1850's, operating the St. Charles Hotel, the Banks Arcade, the City Hotel and the St. James. Morse engaged Gustave Herter in 1862 to furnish his summer residence in Portland though he was still in Louisiana during the Civil War.
