An Important American Classical Mahogany and Gilt-Stencilled Pier Table, c. 1820, New York, the rectangular white marble top above a torus molded frieze displaying a lyre within a wreath, with trailing acanthus vines, mythological bird's head terminals and palmetto flowers, the giltwork finely outlined and shaded; the marble columnar and pilaster supports with giltwood capitals, a mirrored back above concave plinth with geometric border on foliate gilt melon-form feet, height 36.5in., width 43 in., depth 18 in. E7000/10000 Note: The use of stencilled decoration simulating ormolu mounts and gilt bronze moldings, together with marble columns and pilasters, are sumptuous features popular on New York pier tables made in the 1820's and early 1830's. Many of these are attributed to J. & J.W. Meeks and Deming & Buckley.
