An Important American Renaissance Carved Oak Metamorphic Library Chair, patented 1853, Augustus Eliaers (Boston, fl. 1853-1865), oval padded back, crest fail flanked by spaniel heads, stamped label en verso, padded arms, serpentine seat rail centered by a grotesque, hinged step, cabriole legs, paw feet.
PLEASE NOTE: A metamorphic chair by Augustus Eliaers, identical to this lot, was exhibited at the Grand Palais, Paris, in the "Industrial Design" Exhibition 1855. Reference: Dubrow. Styles of American Furniture. p. 40.
