Description:

An Important Regency Gilt Bronze-Mounted Mahogany Center Table, early 19th c., after a design by Thomas Hope, the rectangular top composed of a well-figured mahogany slab, conforming frieze, shaped supports centered by roundels with apotropaic masques after Pompeian examples, anthemion mounts, rectangular plinths, height 35 7/8 in., width 49 3/8 in., depth 19 in.

  • Notes: Note: The design of this table relates directly to a design in Thomas Hope's 1807 Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (pl. xx, nos. 1-2). The supports relate to those on Roman and Etruscan thrones and sarcophagi. Notably, a mosaic top table, of the same design, stood in Hope's Picture Gallery on Duchess Street in London through 1824. The masques centering the supports appear in Hope's Household Furniture, pl xxxvii, and on a pair of giltwood torchères supplied in 1812 to Queen Charlotte for the Crimson Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace (HM Queen Elizabeth II, RCIN 588-1-2).
