An Important Transitional Louis XVI-Style Plum Pudding Mahogany and Bronze Dore' Bureau Cylindre, late 19th c., after a model by Jean- Henri Riesener, the pierced gallery above a rectangular top with canted corners, the narrow cove frieze containing three drawers, the recessed panels outlined in bead molding and fitted with wreath handles set in rosette backplates, the cylinder lid opening to pull- out leather-lined writing surface, the interior organized with open compartments and two pairs of trays, each side having a pull-out leather-lined slide, the lower frieze drawer set between two drawers sans traverse, the cabriole legs mounted by gilt bronze leaves and pierced chutes, ending in animal sabots, the reverse or back sides fully worked with paneling trimmed in bronze dore moldings, height 50 in., width 58 in., depth 31 in. E25000/35000 Note: The design of this bureau is derived from Jean-Henri Riesner's great "bureau du Roi." One is at Versailles and another is now at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. The elements in common include the finely executed mounts applied to the feet, legs, and corners and the brass gallery.
