Description:

Anne Wells Munger (Massachusetts/Mississippi, 1862-1945), "Pass Christian Cottage and Oak Tree", oil on canvas, unsigned, remnants of label reading "Pas...C..." en verso, 15 in. x 18 in., in original frame.

  • Provenance: Provenance : Acquired from the current owners of the house where Anne Wells Munger lived at the end of her life in Worcester, Massachusetts. The paintings had been moved to a detached building following the sale of her furnished home. Note: The colorful palette Munger chose for this painting shows the influence of her teacher, Philip Leslie Hale, who worked with Monet at Giverny. The vibrant shades of green and the use of violet paint in the outlines of the cottage and trees clearly portray Munger's Impressionist style which at times verges on Fauvism.
