Description:

Athos Menaboni (Italian/Georgia, 1895-1990), "Mallards", oil on nakora wood panel, signed lower right, pencil-titled and inscribed "ahas platyhyuchos" en verso, 40 1/8 in. x 30 1/2 in., framed.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Retirement gift from C & S Bank, Albany, Georgia to the consignor.
  • Notes: Note: Athos Menaboni's meticulously rendered depictions of birds follow the tradition of the great American naturalist, John James Audubon. Born in Italy, Menaboni studied at the Royal Academy in Florence before making his way to New York City, where he joined the bohemian community of writers and artists in Greenwich Village. In the 1920s he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he married and eventually opened a studio. Unique to Menaboni's work is his use of Japanese nakora wood panels, which enhance his paintings with an inherent texture that resembles rippling water.
