Attributed to Alessandro Algardi (Italian, 1595-1654), "Two Flagellators of Christ", black-patinated bronze figures, height 9 in. (left figure) and 85-8 in. (right figure), on a later burl veneer and ebonized base (height 31-2 in., length 131/4 in., depth 53/4 in.), total height of ensemble 121-2 in. E5000-10000 Note: These models represent the chastisers flanking two well-known types of three- figure groups representing "The Flagellation of Christ" ("Type A" of c 1628-1630 exemplified by a set in the Brussels Museum, and "Type B" of c. 1632-1635 by another set at Vienna), both of which types are now understood to be original designs by Algardi himself; see Josef Grabski, "The Corsini Flagellation Group by Alessandro Algardi", in Artibus et Historiae no. 16 (1987), pp. 9-23, figs. 4 ("Type A") and 5 ("Type B"). Since the central "Christ" statuette is identical in both sets, the types differ only in the attitudes of the flanking "Flagellators": the A-Types show the left figure with his right arm raised and left lowered (essentially as here, but with the left forearm substantially lower), and the right figure essentially in the pose of this example, but with his right forearm held close to his chest; the B-Types show the left "Flagellator" with both arms raised. The present figures differ from published examples in being fully nude and in their idiosyncratic poses. Their rougher and more generalized surfaces suggest that these might possibly be recuperative casts of preliminary clay models, and therefore datable to c. 1625-1627.
