Attributed to Nicola Marschall (American-Alabama, 1829-1917), Portrait of a Woman in a White Dress and Intaglio Brooch, Blocker Family Member, oil on canvas, unsigned, 30 in. x 25 in., in a period ornate giltwood frame. E2500-3500 Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitter. Accompanied by a photocopy of a handwritten note to the present owner. Note: The sitter in the portrait is a descendant of William Blocker. Known as William the Patriot, Blocker was one of the thirty-nine signers of the Cumberland Resolutions on June 20, 1775 at Liberty Point in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Also known as the Liberty Point Resolves, this was a Declaration of Independence and said in part to go forth and be ready to sacrifice our lives and fortunes to secure the country's freedom and safety. Signing this act required great courage and heroism. If America had lost the war, the British would have executed the signers, including William Blocker, as traitors. According to family tradition, the intaglio brooch worn by the sitter in the portrait originally belonged to Virginia Blocker. Virginia received the brooch as a gift from her future husband Mr. Thomas, when he tossed it into her carriage as she was leaving Mobile. The family note states, Possessions of this kind are stories in the mosaic of our family life which has had many brilliant men and women.
