Claiborne about the Burr Conspiracy, letter, three pages, one sheet, folded, to Governor Claiborne, dated from Natchez, 12th Nov., 1806, delivered by Col. Freeman in private, relating in part: "you are surrounded by dangers of which you dream not & the destruction of the American Union is seriously menaced", and "the President will be fully apprized of the plot, which implicates thousands", Claiborne writes a short note at the end regarding "the injunction of secrecy at to the contents of this letter...", full text available.
- Notes: Note: Along with William C.C. Claiborne, General James Wilkinson shared the honor of taking possession of the Louisiana Territory from the French in 1803 He was largely involved in Burr's "western conspiracy", some say its mastermind. He eventually gave information to Jefferson about Burr's plans, however, perhaps to save himself, and this led to the arrest of both Burr and Swartwout.
