Description:

Carlos Maciá (Cuban-American, 1951-1994), "Commedia", 1986, graphite and mixed media on paper, signed and dated "86" lower right, bearing labels from Barbara Gillman Gallery en verso, 30 in. x 69 in., attractively matted and framed. Provenance: Purchased from the Arthur Roger Gallery, thence to the Collection of Sidney Besthoff, New Orleans. Note: Deeply spiritual, Macia spent years in seminaries in Spain and the Dominican Republic before deciding to leave the priesthood and to concentrate on his art. A fixture of the Cuban/American art scene in Miami, Macia's work was influenced by religious beliefs and his desire to involve the audience emotionally and visually. Macia was the winner of a Florida Arts Council/CINTAS Award in 1983. Reference: www.cintasfoundation.org
