Description:

Carroll Cloar (Arkansas/Memphis, 1913-1993), "Two Girls on a Log", 1989, acrylic on masonite, signed lower left, signed, titled and dated "5-89" en verso, 22 3/4 in. x 33 3/4 in., attractively framed.

  • Notes: Note: Carroll Cloar was born on a cotton farm in Earle, Arkansas, in 1913 His childhood in Arkansas would provide the majority of the inspiration and subject matter for his paintings. Cloar depicted life as he remembered it, with colors based upon his sensory impressions rather than reality. Painted from memory, there is a magical presence to Cloar's work, which although realistically painted in a pointillist style is quite surreal and dreamlike. His intense color and depiction of flat light suggest a suspension in time. This air of reminiscence is very successful as he captures the rural South during the early part of the 20th century and the Depression years.
