American Classical Carved Mahogany Sideboard, c. 1830, probably Anthony Quervelle, Philadelphia, mirror with stepped and gadrooned crest, scrolled grape and grapeleaf brackets, marble-top central cabinet with frieze drawer over two doors; flanked by pedestal cabinets, each fronted by a pylon on acanthus paw feet, h. 62 3/4 in., w. 81 1/2 in., d. 24 1/4 in. Provenance: Historic "Sally Mill", Middleburg, VA. Note: The pedestal cabinets on this sideboard are nearly identical to those on two noted examples, one at the Art Institute of Chicago (acc. 1974.8), the other in the collection of the St Louis Art Museum. Scholar Donald Fennimore observed, "...paired pylons under deep overhanging cove moldings—a concept identical to the formal pylon entrances to Egyptian temples" Ref: Fennimore, Donald.
