This innovative design was shown in the 1853 Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association Exhbition together with a metamorphic library chair. The catalogue called the Eliaers recumbent chair, "carefully made and uncommonly comfortable...a good drawing room article, and the recumbent principle might, in some case, be of convenient indisposition".
