Description:
Chinese School, probably late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), "Two Genealogy Portraits", the male figure portrayed in formal court dress (chaofu) wearing a red, four-clawed dragon surcoat over a court robe with a crane-decorated collar and sleeve bands, and an elaborate headpiece, the female wearing a surcoat bearing a crane rank-badge and a ruby and emerald bejeweled hat, ink, color and gold on silk, 24 in. x 16 1/4 in., framed and glazed.
- Notes: Note: This type of image known as a pu xiang, or genealogy portrait, is related to the full-bodied "ancestor portrait." The sitters are portrayed in the relevant costume appropriate to their rank with a caption identifying their name and place within their generational hierarchy. The headwear, robes and rank badges depicted here indicate that the sitters were either members of the nobility or very high-ranking officials. The sumptuous brocade chair coverings are indicative of persons of extraordinary wealth.
