Clarence Millet, A.N.A. (American/New Orleans, 1897-1959), "Saturday Night, French Quarter Cafe", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 25 in. x 30 in., original painted frame Provenance: Acquired from the artist by the current owner, c. 1945. Note: Clarence Millet returned to New Orleans in 1924 after completing studies at the Art Students' League in New York. His favored subject during this time was the distinctive buildings and street life of the French Quarter. Millet taught night classes at the Arts and Crafts Club where he was a founding member. The painting offered shows a scene Millet may have encountered one evening after class. Demonstrating his skillfulness at depicting light and shadow, the sunset streaked sky barely reveals the rising moon. A group of young men stand under a glowing street lantern while the patrons and illuminated interior of a restaurant are starkly contrasted against the dark evening.
