Clarence Millet American- Louisiana, 1897-1959, "American Legion Building", oil on canvas, c. 1940, signed lower right, signed and titled on reverse, 26in. x 35in. E10000-15000 Note: This landmark on the corner of Royal and Conti Streets was designed by the architects Bickle, Hamblet & Fox for the Bank of Louisiana in 1826 It was remodelled into its present portico configuration by the architect James Gallier, Jr. after a fire in 1840 In addition to being a bank, it has also served as Louisiana State Capitol, an auction exchange, an American Legion post, and is now the Vieux Carre Police Headquarters. It was restored in 1971, by Koch and Wilson. Ref: The Vieux Carre Commission.
