A Fine American Classical Bronze-Mounted Mahogany Box Sofa, early 19th c., New York, cylindrical crest rail, columnar arm supports with boss terminals, acanthus and melon feet, casters, height 33 in., length 79 in., depth 29 in Note: Many elements of this sofa relate to those on notable sofas made in New York. The crest rail is identical to that on a mahogany sofa in the Brooklyn Museum of Art (acc. 41.1181) and that on lot 283 sold Neal Auction Company on December 18, 2008.The columnar arm supports, flat seat rail with drum terminals and carved legs on this sofa are very similar to those on a sofa in the Newark Museum's seminal Classical America exhibition of 1963. Lot 259 sold in these rooms April 18, 2009 is also very closely related. Reference: Voorsanger and Howat. Art and the Empire City, New York 1825-1861, p. 516, pl. 224 and Tracy.
