Lot 421
Description:
A Confederate Cartridge Box, c. 1862, with pewter finial, initials "CHC" lightly carved on inside of front flap, tins lacking, height 6 1/2 in., width 7 in., depth 2 in Note: Several issues on this cartridge box point to Confederate manufacture. The remnants of cow hair and pungent smell point to hastily made, poorly tanned leather. The initials "CHC" suggest Confederate origin, as Union soldiers were not generally allowed to mark their items. The pewter finial affirms the severe shortage of brass in the Confederacy.
